IMPORTANCE OF WATERPROOFING YOUR ROOF PROPERLY
As a result of the weather patterns that have changed worldwide over the last number of years and has become more extreme, it is becoming more and more important to maintain and look after our roofs properly. A roof can severely be damaged by heavy storms, rain, winds and hail. The extreme heat that we experience in South Africa is also a factor that damages our roofs as it melts some of the materials that are used to seal our roofs. In cases where you have experienced heavy rains, winds or hail, it is always advisable to contact us to arrange a free onsite inspection to examine your roof for possible damage. The longer you wait after extreme weather to examine for possible damage, the worse your damage becomes and the more you will have to pay to have the damage repaired.
TYPES OF ROOFS WE WATERPROOF:
- Tiled Roofs
- Metal Roofs
WATERPROOFING OF TILE ROOFS – SCOPE OF WORK
When waterproofing a tile roof, we start by stripping all old waterproofing, we repair all loose and broken cement on ridge tiles, replace broken or cracked tiles. Then we fill up valleys, if applicable, with a screed mixture and allow this to dry. We waterproof all ridge tile saddles vertically and ridge tiles, covering the first row of tiles, horizontally with three coats of an acrylic saturator with an SBP membrane, embedded between two coats. Valleys are waterproofed, if applicable, as well as all flashings. Thereafter the entire roof area is washed down and allowed to dry, and all waterproofed areas are painted with two coats of acrylic roof paint to match the tile colour as close as possible. All that is left after the waterproofing has been completed, is to remove all the rubble from the site.
WATERPROOFING OF METAL ROOFS – SCOPE OF WORK
Here, as with the tile roofs, we start by stripping all old waterproofing, we then remove and replace loose roof screws and washers and remove any rust, either by mechanical means or brush and apply rust primer and converter. All roof screws are then sealed, and vertical overlaps waterproofed with three coats of acrylic saturator and an SBP membrane, embedded between two coats. All flashings are waterproofed and face brick walls will be stepped inside the pips. Then the entire roof is washed down and allowed to dry. The roof is afterwards painted with two coats of acrylic paint, standard roof colours, or with a special colour roof paint which will, unfortunately, have a cost implication. All that is left after the waterproofing has been completed, is to remove all the rubble from the site.
